Nobody ever expects flooding, but whether it's caused by extreme weather or simply bad plumbing it needs to be dealt with immediately. For every additional moment your home or business is immersed in water that's an extra dollar amount in restoration costs. Another rotting floorboard. Another destroyed appliance. Every drop of water causes more hassle and heartache.Flooding is definitely not the sort of problem you can deal with on your own. You could be the world's greatest handyman, but when it comes to flood damage you really need to call in the professionals – especially if your flooding is caused by... let's just say 'unsavory' water.
You see, there are three categories of flooding, and you have to hope against hope that yours will be caused by category one.
Category one flooding is known as 'clean water' flooding. This is simple and easy to deal with. Clean water flooding is caused by an overflowing tub or burst water supply pipe. The flooding presents no health threat, and dealing with it is as simple as removing the water (well, it isn't simple, exactly, but you know what I mean).
Category two flooding is known as 'grey water' flooding, and it's slightly more of a concern. Grey water flooding can be caused by water discharge from washing machines and dishwashers, lavatory water containing urine or seepage due to hydrostatic failure. Grey water contains potentially harmful microorganisms that can cause sickness. In other words, grey water is the kind of stuff a drunken college student would drink on a bet, but you wouldn't want it anywhere near your kids.
Category three flooding, though, is something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. 'Black water' flooding is caused by sewage, seawater or standing water, and it's extremely unpleasant. Black water contains unsanitary agents such as harmful fungi and bacteria, and contact can cause severe sickness.
Now, here's why you need the professionals to help on anything but the most minor spill. If category 2 flood water remains stagnant for 48-72 hours it may be reclassified as back water, a situation that will cost a heck of a lot more to rectify.
My advice? If you experience flooding, don't hesitate. Pick up the phone.
